Baptism

Basis of Faith

At Staplehurst Free Church we practice Believer's Baptism by full immersion. The following includes some thoughts on Baptism taken from a leaflet we produce for potential candidates:

Baptism is a personal matter between the Lord and the individual believer. Christ didn't ask for intense feelings, years of consistency as a Christian or a matured character before baptism.

John 1:12. But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in his name.

Believers should be baptised because:

Christ was baptised, although as a sinless person He had no need to. He didn't want to ask us to do anything that he was not prepared to do Himself.  He has therefore left us an example to follow in His footsteps.

Matthew 3: 13. Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptised by him.

Christ commanded baptism.

Matthew28:19.  Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit.

We desire to obey our lord.

John 14:15. If you love me, keep my commandments.

The Apostles in the early church baptised believers.

Acts 2:41. Then those who gladly received His word were baptised.
